This help document shows you how to create a simple course quickly and add your own learning objects such as assessments and online practice problems.
Video | create a simple course
A course's hierarchy must meet the following minimum requirements:
- 1 Lesson level – think of it as a folder for LOs
- A lesson must contain at least one standard LO; it can’t have only optional LOs
- Edit Instruction at each lesson level to select its standard and skills
In step 1 of creating a new course, all the Course Details fields are mandatory.

Under Pacing Settings, “Duration of a period” is required.
.
The next section, Instructional Settings, is optional but you may wish to provide helpful information if you plan to share the LO with other teachers.

.
In step 2, select the required Standard set, then the specific standards and skills that your course will cover. You cannot move on to the next step until you have selected at least one standard for your course. Try to include all potential standards and skills for LOs that you plan to add throughout the school year. You can always edit the course later and come back to step 2 to add additional standards and skills.

In step 3, Specify Lesson Structure, specify the estimated duration of a lesson (minimum of 5 minutes).

Select the learning object types to include in each lesson. You can select only assessments and interactive practice problems. A standard LO object type is required in each lesson.

Step 4, Edit Course Content, is where you first specify the course hierarchy then build your course. For the simple course with just a lesson level, delete Level 1 (Unit) and Level 2 (Topic). Click Apply.
.
On the right hand side, under My Course, click the Add dropdown then Add Lesson to begin creating your course.
.
Give the "lesson 1" level a title and then click the 3-dots and select Edit Instruction. This is required for each lesson level before you can add an LO. Here you will select the standards and skills associated with LOs you will add to this lesson.
.
Now you can add your assessments and interactive practice problems to this lesson. When you click Add LO, the next screen is a view of the Learning Object Manager with only the LO types that you selected in step 3 and LOs that meet the standards and skills that you selected in Edit Instruction. Walch LOs that meet the selected standards and skills will also be displayed.

When you are done adding your LOs, click Preview or Publish your course. You can also save your course as draft and return to edit and publish at a later time. Your published custom course will appear on the “Courses created by me” tab in the Course Manager and ready to be assigned to your class.

You may wish to add additional lessons (think of them as folders) for grouping LOs together and make the course preview easier to navigate.
