This help document shows you how to drill into the standards associated with your course and select specific standards or skills to include in the course you are building.
When Building a New Course, you go through five steps. Selecting the specific standards and skills you want to use for the course is part of Step 2: Select Standards & Skills.
**NOTE** You cannot access this section until you have completed the Select the Standard Set section first.
Select Standards and Skills
In this step, you select the specific standards and skills you want included in your course.
The course builder will display a list of all of the standards associated with the standard set you chose under “Select the Standard Set”. You can now review the standards to select those that you want to include in the course you are building. **NOTE** You MUST select at least one standard in order to continue.
Unpack Standards
You are able to drill into the list to unpack the standards and get down to the skills associated with each.
**NOTE** For general information on navigating the screens in the course builder, including filtering your results, please see Course Builder | Navigation Tips.
You can enter a standard or skill into the search bar to narrow your results further. For example, if the course or module you are creating is focused on statistics, you can search for the standards associated with that term.
The listing will now show only those standards associated with your search term. You can then further drill in by clicking into each level.
Select Standards
To select a standard to include in your course, click the checkbox to the left of the standard. For example, in the image below, the [S-ID.B] standard was checked, which then selects all standards at that level and any standards and skills in the subcategories below it.
Skills
You can get even more granular by removing skills that you don’t need to cover in the course you are building.
Skills shown in a purple bubble are included, while skills shown in a white bubble are not.

To remove a skill, click on any of the highlighted skills and the course builder will deselect them. In the image below, “exponential” and “other” have been deselected.
Additional Standards
You can also include standards from another course, not just the course specified in your standard set. To select standards from another course, see Course Builder: Selecting standards and skills from another course.
Next Steps
When finished selecting the standards and skills you want included in your course, click the Next button at the bottom of the screen to move on to Course Builder | Step 3: Specify the duration of a lesson within a course.
