This help document provides an overview of learning objects, which are the building blocks of courses in the Curriculum Engine.

What is a learning object?

A learning object is any instructional piece that you use in your lessons. They are the individual tasks that have been used to build your assigned course(s) and that you can access to create additional courses or modules in the Curriculum Engine.

The Curriculum Engine comes pre-populated with thousands of these instructional objects, which have been curated by BW Walch and are a mix of proprietary items as well as OERs. The exact number of learning objects will vary depending on which standards your state uses. Each learning object is aligned to the appropriate standards and skills.

Where can I find the learning objects?

To open the Learning Object Repository, go to the Content menu at the top right of the screen and select the Learning Object Manager option.

This will bring up the Learning Object Repository with all of the learning objects currently available.

What types of learning objects are available?

The learning objects listed in your repository have been broken out into specific folders based on the type of instructional component that they represent. For example, some of the categories include:

  • Warm-Ups & Debriefs
  • Guided Practices
  • Interactive Practice Problems

Go to the Learning Object Repository to see all of the folders and types available.

What is the difference between standard and optional learning objects?

A course in the Curriculum Engine is composed of individual learning objects, which include tasks such as a warm-up or printable practice problems. There are two groups of learning objects:

Standard: When a course is assigned to a class in the Curriculum Engine, any standard learning objects in that course are automatically available to students.

Optional: When a course is assigned to a class in the Curriculum Engine , any optional learning objects in that course need to be assigned to a student before they will have access to them.

Can I create my own learning object?

See Learning Object Builder | How to create a new learning object for help on creating a new learning You can also copy and modify existing learning objects.  See Assessment Builder | How to create an online assessment for help documentation on creating an assessment learning object in the Curriculum Engine.
