This help document gives you four quick ideas on how you can use the Curriculum Engine to enhance your Walch print materials.

Getting started with new software can be daunting. While the Curriculum Engine provides a variety of powerful features, including the ability to quickly create and share custom courses, you can also use some features of the Curriculum Engine to quickly enhance your course print materials.

1. Use Interactive Practice Problems (IPP)

One of the key advantages of using the Curriculum Engine is that in addition to your print materials you now have access to technology-enhanced resources that can add to the learning experience for your students.

For example, when available a set of Interactive Practice Problems is included with your lessons. These are online Learnosity-based problems.

To view the Interactive Practice Problems, go to the Content menu at the top right of the screen and select the Course Manager option to open the course manager window.

You will see a list of the Walch courses that have been assigned to you. They are located under the "Courses assigned to me" tab.

Click on the course name to open it in preview mode. It will open to the first page of the course.

  • Click the hamburger icon located at the top left to open the Table of Contents (TOC) for the course.

  • Click the arrows to the right of the unit level to expand the TOC and see options under each level.

  • Drill into the TOC to get down to the lesson level (the lowest level). Clicking the plus (+) icon at each level will expand it and show you the options below.

  • Each IPP can be found at the lesson level. They will be identified by the multi-colored (red, yellow, and blue) icon to the left, and will be labeled “Interactive Practice Problem.

  • Click on the IPP to preview it. You're students will have access to this standard learning object as soon as the course is assigned to them.

Suggested Usage

  • You can use the IPP as a classroom activity, which can be helpful if your district is not one-to-one and only has limited access to technology.
  • You can have the IPP activities completed in groups. **NOTE** The Curriculum Engine can be set to scramble the answer order for the questions.

Additional Information

When using the IPP, students can check their answers twice and the CE will let them know if they are correct. They can change answers as many times as they want, but can only check answers twice.

2. Use the Printable Practice Problems

In addition to the IPP, each lesson comes with two sets of Printable Practice Problems for students to complete. These printable practice problems are open-ended questions that can provide additional practice to your students.

You can view them using the steps outlined above for seeing the IPP. The Printable Practice Problems will be located under each lesson:

There will typically be two sets of printable practice problems: Practice Set A and Practice Set B. The Printable Practice Set A aligns with the Online Practice Set A.

The Printable Practice Problems are standard learning objects, which means your students have access to them automatically when using their Curriculum Engine courses. You do not need to assign them separately.

You can also choose to print out the practice problems and distribute directly to students.

Suggested Usage

  • Print them out and distribute to students for additional practice.
  • Assign them as homework for additional practice.

3. Use the Scaffolded and Skills Practices

Scaffolded and Skills Practices are new to the Curriculum Engine and are not in all print materials. For some courses, this is an online-only resource. Each Scaffolded Practice is comprised of questions at DOK Levels 1 and 2.

You can view the Scaffolded and Skills Practices first by using the steps outlined above for the IPP. **NOTE** When available the Scaffolded Practices are located under each lesson and are typically the FIRST “printable practice problem” that you see.

When you open the item in view mode, you will see “Scaffolded Practice” or "Skills Practice" at the top of the document.

The Scaffolded and Skills Practices are also standard learning objects, which means your students have access to them automatically when using their Curriculum Engine courses. They do not need to be assigned separately.

The Scaffolded and Skills Practices are PDFs, so you can also choose to print and distribute them to students.

Suggested Usage

  • Use them at the start of the lesson as a refresher.
  • Print them out and distribute to students for additional practice.

4. Find Resources in the Learning Object Repository

In the Curriculum Engine, each of the lesson tasks has been broken down into individual learning objects. These learning objects can be found in the Learning Object Repository. In addition to all of the Walch materials used in your courses, you can access various OERs in the repository.

To view the repository, go to the Content menu at the top right of the screen and select the Learning Object Manager option to open the learning object manager window.

While the repository will have thousands of items, you can use the search and filter features to narrow down your results and find additional resources for your classroom. Filtering by learning objects specific to the standards or skills you want to reinforce can quickly narrow down your results.

Click the Filter button and then click Standards and Skills:

This will bring up a window where you can select your standard set. Then click “Show Standards and Skills” to see all of the standards associated with that standard set.

You can now select specific standards and skills for which you want to locate learning objects. See Filter your learning object results to align with specific standards and skills.

Suggested Usage

  • Filter the repository to find items aligned with specific standards or skills.
  • Print out PDF resources to share with students.
  • Assign interactive resources to your course and share with students online.
