This help document will show you how to assign optional learning objects to students in the Curriculum Engine.
Creating assignments for students is done under the Manage Course feature. Please see Classes | Manage Course overview for more information.
Learning Objects
A course in the Curriculum Engine is composed of individual learning objects, which include tasks such as a warm-up or printable practice problems. There are two types of learning objects:
Standard: When a student is assigned a course in the Curriculum Engine, any standard learning objects in that course are automatically available to students. Due dates can be issued for any standard learning object. Once a due date is issued, the standard learning object will be allocated as an assignment on the student interface. For more information, please see Manage Course | How to set due dates for learning object tasks.
*NOTE* To create a due date for an interactive practice problem, please see Manage Course | How to set due dates for standard learning object tasks. However, interactive practice problems can be set to "graded" or "practice" as mentioned in this document.
Optional: When a student is assigned a course in the Curriculum Engine, any optional learning objects in that course need to be assigned to a student before they will have access to them.
Create Assignment
Under the Course Plan and Progress Tracking heading, you’ll see a section to View & Create Assignments. To view, modify or create additional assignments, click the Start button located on the right.
This will open the View & Create Assignments window. Any assignments that have already been created will be listed on the left under Assignment Name.
To create a new assignment, click the Create New Additional Assignment link at the bottom right of the window.
The Create Assignment window will open.
There are two steps to creating a new assignment.
- Step 1: Select the optional learning objects to include in the assignment.
*NOTE* You cannot move to step 2 until you have entered the assignment name.
- Step 2: Select the students who will get the assignment.
Both steps must be completed before you can create the assignment.
Assignment Name
Under the Additional Assignment Name field, enter the name of the assignment you are creating.
*NOTE* You must do this prior to moving to step 2.
*Note* Assignment name is for teacher purpose only. Students will see the title of the learning object(s) assigned.
Step 1: Select Optional LOs
Below the name field, you will see your course. You will need to expand the view to see the learning objects associated with the course.
You can use the Expand All option located at the top right of the course to see all of the learning objects in the course, or you can click the down caret (˅) located to the right of each section to expand just one section at a time.
Check the Show only Optional filter to see only optional learning objects in the course. Only optional learning objects can be assigned to individual students. Standard learning objects are automatically available to all students.
To select the item you want to include in the assignment, click the checkbox to the left of that item.
**NOTE** You can create an assignment with as many learning objects included as you would like. For example, you could go through Lesson 1 and create a single assignment that contains all of the optional learning objects that you plan to use for that lesson, or you can create an assignment with just a single learning object.
As you check the learning objects that you want to include in the assignment, some additional options become available:
Include in Progress Report
The first is to include the task in the progress report. The Curriculum Engine will default this option to checked, which means the object will be included in the progress report. You can deselect the learning object by unchecking the box.
*NOTE* this process is the same for when assigning due dates to standard learning objects. Please see Manage Course | How to set due dates for learning object tasks.
View Options
At the top right, there will be tags that help further identify the learning object you are adding to the assignment.
In the example below, the red, yellow and blue multi-color icon indicates that this is a technology-enhanced item – in this case, a Learnosity activity. The task sub-type is also listed. In this case, it is a pre-assessment.
If you want to see which standards this learning object is associated with, you can click the View Standards and Skills link at the top right. This will open a pop-up that shows you the standards and skills.
Graded
For technology-enhanced items that have grades, you can specify whether you want the learning object to be graded or used for practice by selecting the appropriate button to the right of the "Include in Progress Report" checkbox. The "Practice" button is selected by default.
*NOTE* The student results for tasks set to practice will be available in the Item Analysis Report but will NOT show up in the Gradebook Report. If you want the student grades to appear in the Gradebook Report, you must change the type to "graded" when creating the assignment.
*NOTE* To create a due date for an interactive practice problem please see Manage Course | How to set due dates for learning object tasks. However, interactive practice problems can be set to "graded" or "practice" as mentioned below.
If students exit and return to an online task in the Curriculum Engine, will their answers be saved?
The system will save answers on partially competed graded or practice tasks.
For Learning Objects that are set to GRADED, when students launch the assignment:
1: They can save and exit the progress they have done so far.
2: After submitting the assignment, the score summary is displayed.
3: They can only submit the assignment once.
For Learning Objects that are set to PRACTICE, when students launch the assignment:
1: They can save and exit the progress they have done so far.
2: After submitting the assignment, the score summary is displayed.
3: They can reattempt the assignment.
Date Restrictions
At the bottom of the task window, there are two date fields:
- Assignment Due By: Here you can enter a due date for this task.
- Restrict Availability of LO: Here, you can set a time period for when the task will be available to the students.
For more information on setting these dates, see Manage Course | How to set due dates for learning object tasks.
Specify Additional Properties
For online tasks, you can also set additional properties. See Assignments | How to specify additional properties for more information.
Step 2: Select Students
When you are done selecting your learning objects and setting their parameters, you need to select the students who will get the assignment.
You will need to scroll back to the top of the assignment window to go to the next step. Under the Create Assignment bar, click on Step 2: Select Students.
The Curriculum Engine will bring up a list of the students in the class.
To select all students, click the checkbox at the top to the left of the Student column heading. This will select ALL students.
To select individual students, click the checkbox to the left of that student’s name.
*NOTE* a learning object can only be assigned to a student once. If an LO has already been assigned to a student, the checkbox will be faint and a checkmark can not be applied.
Save
Once you have selected the students who will get the assignment, go to the top right of the Create Assignment bar and click the Create button to save the assignment.
**NOTE** There is also a Discard button if you do not want to save the assignment. If the discard button is pressed no work will be saved and you will start over.
The Curriculum Engine will prompt you when the assignment has been saved successfully. Once saved, you have the option to "Share with Classroom" which will allow you to share the assignment to a Google Classroom. See Google Classroom | How to share an assignment you are creating with Google Classroom for more information.
If you don't want to share with Google Classroom, you can click the Cancel button to return to the assignment listing.
Your assignment will now be listed under Additional Assignments. To return to Manage Course, you need to first exit the assignments screen.
Click the Exit button at the top right.
For information on editing an existing assignment, see Manage Course | Edit an existing assignment.
