This help document teaches you how to set the hierarchy for your course. There are three levels available for course hierarchy. You can use as many of the three levels as you need. You must have at least one level, which is the default lesson level.
When Building a New Course, you go through five steps. Setting your course hierarchy is part of Step 4: Edit Course Content.
Edit Course Hierarchy | Initial Setup
Now that you’ve completed Course Builder | Step 3: Select activities to include in each lesson, you are ready to edit your course content.
If you are building a new course and moving from Step 3 to Step 4 for the first time, the Edit Course Hierarchy window will pop up automatically, displaying a default structure. You can edit this structure as outlined below under Edit Options.
Edit Course Hierarchy | Reset All
If you did a Reset All to start creating your lesson structure from scratch, you can access the course hierarchy from the Edit Course Hierarchy button under the My Course section.
**NOTE** Once you have added lessons to your course, you will no longer have access to editing the course hierarchy. If you are editing a course and want to update the course hierarchy, you will need to click Reset All to access the Edit Course Hierarchy option.
You can structure the hierarchy of your course using up to three levels. The defaults are Unit, Topic, and Lesson.
- To remove a level, click the trash can icon to the right of the level you want to delete.
- To add a level, click the + icon on the bottom right of the Edit Course Hierarchy window.
- To rename a level, click on the name field and enter new name. **NOTE** You can only edit the name of the top two-tier levels. You cannot rename the lesson level.
You do not need to have multiple hierarchy levels. You can delete the first two levels and have just the lesson level if you want.
Save Hierarchy
Once you are done adjusting your course hierarchy, click the Apply button to save your changes.
See Course Builder | Step 4: Move suggested lessons into your course for next steps on creating your course.
If you are editing an existing course, see Course Editor | Step 4: How to expand your course view to continue forward with modifying your course.
